TASCAM's CD-A550 is a combination CD player/cassette recorder. Like TASCAM's CD-200, the model uses TEAC's new CD-5020A drive mechanism, designed for audio playback with a smooth loading drawer and low clamping noise. Features include MP3 and WAV file playback, CD Text display, Auto Cue and Auto Ready. A digital output and pitch control is available for both the CD and cassette mechanisms. The CD-A550 combination CD player and cassette recorder has unbalanced phono inputs and outputs. Contractor-specific features such as power-on play, a wired remote control, rackmountable design and CD shock memory ensure reliable performance.

Initial quality on this device was absolutlely superior....then after about two months of frequent usage, it began "eating cassettes" and one of the pinch rollers broke off. I would expect a product with the Tascam badge to be more rugged and reliable. That said, after shipping it back to the factory, it was fixed and returned within three weeks, so high marks for customer service. It remains to be seen how it will do going forward. I have already converted 300 cassettes to CDs with it, and I have another 400 to be done. I am hopeful it will hold up and be able to complete these conversions.
